MEP: plumbing, electrical, ventilation, air conditioning and heating

The building services of a concept house in Sapporo, from easy to hard: connect the fixtures to a pipe shaft and an エコキュート, draw outlets, switches, lights and the distribution board, add 24-hour ventilation, size and place a cold-climate air conditioner with its piping and 200 V circuit, then panel heaters, a towel rail, an FF heater with its oil tank, floor heating and a storage heater 蓄熱暖房機 — and read it all in the legend, the schedules, the quantities and the estimate. Every edit is undone with Ctrl+Z; nothing is saved.

Step by step

1 · Plumbing

T10-01

The plumbing plan and its fixtures

Every catalogue fixture brings its service points: cold 給水, hot 給湯 and drain 排水, with the size (13A, 40A, 75A…) and the position the maker gives. The Plumbing tool switches the view to the plumbing plan (layer combination 04 Plumbing) and shows its palette in the Info Box: points and equipment, outdoor items (water meter, pits, septic tank) and the runs (cold, hot, drain, gas…).

T10-02

A pipe shaft for the mains

The Info Box sets the next shaft: size (450 × 450, 600 × 450…), the floors it runs through, the risers (drain 排水立管, vent, cold, hot, gas, reheat, conduit, duct), the access door, and whether vents go through the roof. You can click to place it yourself (R turns it 90°), or take the suggestion: Add pipe shaft here puts it where the fixtures can reach it, with the risers they need.

T10-03

The water heater: an エコキュート outside

The library's Heating & hot water category holds the water heaters and heaters as real objects: エコキュート tank and heat pump, oil boiler and oil tank, gas water heater, FF heater, panel heater, towel rail. Each has its size and its service needs (here 370 L, square), and Connect fixtures to plumbing treats it as the hot-water source. The click puts the back corner on the wall face, but the object keeps its angle: at 0° its front faces south, so against a north outer wall set 180° first, or it stands inside the room. The shaft from the previous step is on the plan now (PS, with its four risers).

T10-04

Connect fixtures to plumbing

Site & MEP › Connect fixtures to plumbing: supply, hot water and drain runs from every fixture to the shaft and the エコキュート, with sizes and slopes, in one undo step.

T10-05

The runs, and what is still open

Blue lines are cold water, red hot water, green drains with their fall; the labels give the size of each run (13A, 20A, 40A, 75A). The runs are ordinary elements: select one to change its size or route, move a fixture and run the command again for the new points. Connect all plumbing (all levels) does every story at once, upper stories first. The message also names the two remote controls the エコキュート asks for (浴室 / 台所リモコン): they are electrical symbols (Electrical tool › Remote).

T10-06

Water meter and sewage pit, then connect again

The outdoor palette holds the site side of the plumbing: water service entry 給水引込, water meter, stop valve, the pits (sewage 汚, grey water 雑, rain 雨, soakaway 浸, outfall 放), grease trap, septic tank 浄化槽 and the outfall. The pit size and depth are set in the Info Box. Connect again and the shaft's drain stack runs to the sewage pit, its cold riser to the meter; for the drive, the public sewer and the water main, use Site & MEP › Service line.

2 · Electrical

T10-07

The Electrical tool and the electrical plan

Hover a symbol to read its name. Wall symbols (outlets, switches, the board) snap to the nearest wall face and turn with it; ceiling symbols (lights, smoke alarms) go where you click. Mounting height sets the height from the floor (outlets 250, switches 1,200…) — it is written next to the symbol when it differs from the default. This bedroom already has two outlets, a weatherproof outlet, a switch and a ceiling light wired to it.

T10-08

An outlet and a downlight

The dashed line from the switch to the ceiling light is a switch wiring link (Wiring, first button: click the switch, then the light it feeds). It is a real link: move the switch or the light and it follows, delete one and it goes. Shift-click feeds several lights from one switch; for a 3-way switch, wire both switches to the same light. Light symbols can carry a catalogue fixture (ODELIC, DAIKO, Panasonic… with watts and lumen): select the light and choose it in the Info Box.

T10-09

The distribution board 分電盤

The board is a wall symbol like the others, and it is what the dedicated circuits look for: when you place an air conditioner or a storage heater, SumiCAD draws its 200 V circuit (AC-1, SH-1…) from the outlet to the board on the same floor, with the cable size for the breaker. With no board on that floor, the unit's checks warn that the home run is missing.

T10-10

The legend and counts

The panel counts from the model, so it is always current: outlets by type, switches, lights (by catalogue fixture when one is set), the plumbing points by size, vent caps and fans, and the metres of wire, pipe and duct. Its buttons open the electrical, plumbing and ventilation plans of the current story and run the plumbing helpers. The same legend is printed on the MEP sheets.

3 · Ventilation

T10-11

24-hour ventilation: fans and vent caps

Japanese houses need 24-hour ventilation (0.5 air changes an hour, 建築基準法施行令 20条の8): a class-3 system pairs exhaust fans in the toilet, bathroom and kitchen with supply vents in the living rooms; a class-1 system uses a heat-recovery unit. The palette has supply and exhaust grilles, the pipe fan, the heat-recovery unit, vent caps, the flue and the range hood, plus the heating & cooling symbols. Draw a duct run (Runs › Duct, size in the Info Box) from a ceiling fan to its vent cap; Connect fixtures to plumbing also takes a kitchen hood's duct straight out to a vent cap.

4 · Air conditioning

T10-12

Size the room (JIS C 9612)

The need comes from the loads of JIS C 9612 附属書D (the table behind the makers' 畳数の目安: 木造 220 W/m² cooling, 275 W/m² heating; 1 畳 = 1.65 m²), corrected for a high ceiling, the top floor, an RC building and a west-facing room. Sapporo is energy region 2, so the tool checks the heating at the design temperature (−15 ℃) and recommends only cold-climate models (DAIKIN スゴ暖, Mitsubishi ズバ暖, Panasonic フル暖エオリア). This 13.5 m² bedroom needs 6.5 kW of heating at −15 ℃: the 4.0 kW cold-climate class gives about 7.3 kW there.

T10-13

Place the indoor and the outdoor unit

The indoor unit sits under the ceiling with the maker's top clearance; the ghost shows its side clearances. The outdoor unit backs onto the nearest outer wall (ground pad, wall bracket, roof stand or balcony: Mount in the Info Box). Then the whole system is routed in one undo step: the refrigerant pair through a sleeve (φ65, or φ75 for a 12.7 mm gas pipe) with a 10 mm outward fall and down the wall, the drain hose at a fall to the ground (or to a rain pit within 6 m), and a dedicated 200 V outlet beside the unit with its home run (circuit AC-1, VVF) to the board on this floor. The outdoor unit stands on the ground, so it is drawn on the 1F plan; 3D and the sections show the whole run.

T10-14

The checks

Each check is green, amber or red: refrigerant piping against the model's maximum length and height difference (with the extra charge beyond the charge-less length), drain fall at least 1/100 with no rise, the indoor clearances to the ceiling and side walls, the outdoor clearances, the outlet voltage and its home run, and the room capacity. In a cold region with a ground mount it reminds you of a high stand above the snow and a snow hood. Re-route piping routes again after you move a unit; Frame clash check tests the pipe hole against posts, braces and studs. The Room / AC schedule lists every habitable room with m², 畳, the cooling and heating it needs (at −15 ℃ here), the class and the units placed — Bedroom 2 is green with its S406ATDP; the living room needs more than one 7.1 kW unit.

5 · Heating

T10-15

The Heating tool: a hot-water panel heater

The Heating tool has seven types: floor heating zone, panel heater / hot-water panel, towel rail, FF heater, storage heater, air conditioner (it hands over to the Air conditioner tool) and wood stove (Object library). Wall types snap to the wall face; the Info Box sets the size, the height from the floor and hot water or electric. A hot-water panel brings a flow and a return point (13A) for Connect fixtures to plumbing — they go to a boiler whose Serves 用途 is 暖房専用 or 給湯暖房 (never to the hot-water-only エコキュート). The boiler and the tank are library objects (Object › Heating & hot water), like the エコキュート in part 1.

T10-16

A towel rail and an FF heater

The FF heater (FF式暖房機, forced flue — the usual Hokkaido kerosene heater) needs an outside wall for its flue ⌀110, 100 V, and a kerosene line ⌀8 copper to the oil tank. The towel rail is a small hot-water (or electric) radiator for the bathroom. Both carry their service points; every heater is counted in the schedules, the quantities and the estimate.

T10-17

Connect the heating circuits

Heating circuits 暖房 往き / 戻り only connect to a boiler that serves heating; if there is none the message says so and how to fix it (select the boiler, Serves 用途 in the Info Box). The runs show on the 1F plumbing plan and in the ventilation & HVAC plan, and their metres go into the quantities. The FF heater's flue is not connected for you on this house: draw its flue and vent cap with the Ventilation tool.

T10-18

Floor heating 床暖房

A zone is drawn per room (or as a polygon), hot water or electric, with its loop spacing. The panel (温水マット, 24 mm here) lies on the structural plywood under the finish, and Level floors by keeps every finished floor level: a raiser in the other rooms, or the heated rooms lowered. 土間 rooms get the pipes in the slab. A hot-water zone also brings its heating flow and return for the boiler.

T10-19

Storage heater 蓄熱暖房機: size it

A storage heater 蓄熱暖房機 charges its bricks with cheap night-rate electricity (8 hours) and gives the heat back during the day — very common in Hokkaido. The catalogue is Hokuei's 暖吉くん: fan models MVA 2–7 kW and fanless MN 1.1–3.3 kW with their sizes, weights with the bricks, breakers and clearances from the maker's sheets. The sizing helper turns the room area you type into 帖 (÷ 1.62 m²) and picks the smallest model whose room guide reaches it: 20 m² → 12.3 帖 → MVA-5000 (guide 10–14 帖); Use takes it. The guide is for new houses in Hokkaido; for other regions or old houses, make a heat-load calculation.

T10-20

Place it: the 200 V circuit comes with it

The outlet label reads SH-1 専用 200V 40A 蓄熱暖房機 (深夜電力): a dedicated circuit on the night-rate contract, with the cable sized for the breaker (15/20 A VVF 1.6-3C, 30 A VVF 2.6-3C, 40 A CV 8 mm², 50 A CV 14 mm²). Fan models also need 100 V for the fan and the controls. The home run goes to the board on this floor — the one placed in part 2.

T10-21

Its checks: clearances, circuit, weight on the 2F

An MVA-5000 weighs 265 kg with its bricks. On the ground floor the check gives the point load as information; on an upper floor it is a warning: Storage heater 265 kg on the 2F floor: check the joists (2.6 kN point load with the bricks). The structure calculation itself does not take the load — add a joist or a beam under it if needed. Front, side and top clearances are measured against the real wall faces and the ceiling.

6 · Schedules, quantities and the estimate

T10-22

MEP in the quantities

Each row has its unit, amount and how it is counted. The 空調 group has the air conditioner by model, the refrigerant piping by its 3D length (6.70 m here), the drain hose, the sleeve, the outdoor stand and the 200 V dedicated circuit; the 電気 group the circuits' wire in metres; the 暖房・給湯 group the storage heater (5 kW, 200 V 40 A, 265 kg) with its 専用回路 200 row, the boiler, the tank, the panel heater, the towel rail and the FF heater. Export CSV… sends the list to a spreadsheet.

T10-23

The estimate lines

The estimate never invents a price: lines show unlinked until your firm's Price list… gives them one (aircon:… and storageheat:… keys), or the catalogue product has a maker price. Once the prices are in, the lines follow the model — move the outdoor unit and the piping metres change.
