Kitchen & wardrobe designer

The Kitchen tool and the kitchen & wardrobe designer, on a concept house in Sapporo: draw a run with a typed length, build an I + island layout, then choose cabinets, drawers or doors, the worktop, catalogue appliances (Panasonic IH, Shigeru sink, dishwasher, hood, fridge), connect the sink and the dishwasher to the plumbing, draw a wardrobe and an 押入れ in a bedroom, and read the kitchen in plan, 展開図, 3D, quantities and the estimate. Every edit is undone with Ctrl+Z; nothing is saved.

Step by step

1 · Draw the kitchen

T5-01

The Kitchen tool

Here the house's kitchen has been taken out, so we draw it again on the north wall of the LDK. The Info Box of the tool:

  • Placement point — which edge of the run your two clicks draw: back (default, on the wall face), middle or front. A cycles it while drawing.
  • Type — Kitchen or Wardrobe (the same tool draws both).
  • System — IKEA METOD + MAXIMERA (default), a LIXIL series, or Custom sizes. The system sets the widths, heights and codes of the units.
  • Place — Along a wall or Free (island); Run goes to — add the run to the selected kitchen or make a new element.
T5-02

Click the start, type the length

Like a wall, the run takes a typed length: after the first click, just type the number — it goes into the length box of the tracker (Tab moves to the angle) — and Enter places the run. 4,420 mm is the clear width between the outer wall and the partition.

The new run is already a working kitchen for the system: base units with drawers, an 800 sink base with an under-mount sink, a 600 dishwasher, an 800 IH hob base, wall units and a range-hood space over the hob. The detailed plan shows the sink, the hob rings, the dishwasher (DW) and the wall units dashed.

T5-03

Select it: the kitchen's Info Box

The kitchen is one element (Casework) with its runs. The Info Box shows IKEA METOD + MAXIMERA, 1 · 14 · 4.42 m (runs · units · length), the worktop (Solid surface (Corian) t37 · 4.43 m · 2.88 m²) and the Check (⚠ 1 to fix: the hob is next to a window). Kitchen drawings (K.*) and In this plan come back in part 6. Designer… (in the Info Box, or this menu) opens the designer.

T5-04

The designer

From the top: the runs (A 4420), the colour chips for Fronts, Worktop and Carcass, the run bar (4420 / 4420 mm — units / run length, Floor units / Wall units, Flip front, Make island), the kitchen system, then the strip: one box per unit with its width and what it is. Under it: + Before / + After, Move, Duplicate, Remove, and the quick-add rows (Base with drawers or doors, Sink base, Hob base, Wall units, Tall 600: oven, fridge, pantry). Further down: the live 展開図 (click a unit to pick it, wheel zooms, drag pans) and a small plan of the whole kitchen.

Every click in the designer is one undo step. Drag the panel's left edge to make it wider.

T5-05

Layout: I, L, U, island, peninsula

The preset keeps run A where you drew it and builds the rest: L and U add legs B (and C) along the walls with corner cabinets (METOD blind corner 128×68 or 88×88) and one joined worktop; Corner on the left or right; Peninsula turns the second leg into a counter open on the room side; + island adds a free island (Island length). + Add island adds just the island to what you have.

The island (run B) has its own settings: which run it faces, the aisle (900 / 1000 / 1100 / 1200 or typed), Centre / Left end / Right end / Offset, Facing the run / Back to the run / Turned 90°, one row with a seating overhang (300 for stools) or 2 × 60 back-to-back. Drag it in the small plan or by its handle in the plan; the aisle snaps to the usual widths and turns red outside 900–1,200. Ctrl+Z undoes the whole layout.

2 · Cabinets

T5-06

The house's kitchen in the designer

From part 2 on we use the kitchen as designed for the house — same tools, finished choices: walnut veneer fronts, a white Corian worktop, an 800 sink base with a Shigeru under-mount sink, a 600 dishwasher, an 800 IH hob, drawers everywhere else, and a 2,400 island with a 300 seating overhang. Click a unit in the strip (or in the 展開図) to edit it.

T5-07

One unit: type, width, front

Unit type is base, tall, island, appliance housing, filler, end panel (サイドパネル) or open space. Width offers the system's standard widths (METOD 150 … 900); a typed width snaps to them — only fillers take any width. Front: doors (1 or 2 leaves, hinge side), drawers, open shelves, glass doors, appliance front or none; for METOD the MAXIMERA row picks the real drawer / door combination and shows its IKEA Japan name. Colour of this unit and Worktop over it override the kitchen colours for this unit only (a dot marks it).

Below: the unit's appliances — here the Shigeru 672AD FS sink with its size, the worktop cut-out, and its service points (cold and hot water, drain, with heights and sizes), then the tap.

T5-08

Drawers or doors

Base · Drawers / Doors sets what the quick-add buttons (+ 400, + 600, + 800, + 900) add. For an existing unit, Front changes it: here the first 600 base goes from 3 drawers to doors, and the 展開図 and the plan follow. Full-extension drawers are the usual choice in Japanese kitchens; doors suit the sink base (pipes) and corner units.

T5-09

Wall units and the hood space

Floor units / Wall units switches the strip, the tools and the quick-add row to the tier you edit. Over the hob the tier has an open space carrying the range hood (the hood is added on the wall tier). Height, bottom and depth of the wall units are kitchen settings (next step).

T5-10

Worktop, plinth, heights: Kitchen settings

Each line shows how the number is made: Counter height 917 = legs 80 + frame 800 + top 37; Depth 650 = 620 (frame 600 + front) + overhang 15 + gap 15. Worktop: solid surface (Corian), laminate, stainless steel, solid wood or quartz, with its thickness, product name, overhangs (front, back gap, left, right — with a note when the material needs a margin at the ends), edge and sink mount (undermount here). Then Handles, the door and carcass names, the tap for all sinks, drawer runners, hinges and notes — they go into the spec and the lists. Kitchen drawings and In this plan are repeated at the bottom, with the Services count.

3 · Appliances

T5-11

A hob from the catalogue

The catalogue picker is Maker ▸ Category ▸ Model, with a search by code or series. Makers in 0.6: Miele, ASKO, Electrolux, Bosch, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Rinnai, Liebherr, Fujioh, Ariafina and Shigeru — IH and gas hobs, ovens and steam ovens, dishwashers (45 and 60 cm), fridges and freezers, range hoods, coffee machines and sinks. Here: Panasonic KZ-S1F7 (W748). The model card gives the size, the worktop cut-out (560 × 460) and the supply (200 V 30 A, dedicated circuit) at a standard height; edit the height or the spec on its line. Custom keeps the size but drops the catalogue link. A range hood is added the same way on the wall tier; a model that does not fit its unit gets a ⚠ line.

T5-12

Fridge and oven: tall units

+ Oven, + Fridge and + Pantry add a 600 high-cabinet frame with an oven housing, an integrated-fridge housing or shelves. The run bar and the strip always show the balance: when the units do not fill the run, the gap is shown in orange and Filler n adds a filler of exactly that width (Trim filler when the units are too long). A freestanding fridge, common in Japan, is an open space unit with a fridge from Custom appliance (its width and height are typed). Ctrl+Z takes each step back.

4 · Water, drain, duct, power

T5-13

A pipe shaft for the mains

Every appliance carries its service points: the sink cold, hot water and drain, the dishwasher water and drain, the hood's exhaust duct, the IH 200 V supply and the other outlets — with heights (FL+) and sizes from the catalogue model, or typical values for a custom appliance. They appear on the plumbing, electrical and ventilation plans by themselves. For the pipes, the Pipe shaft (PS) tool places a shaft with its risers (drain, vent, cold, hot); here it goes next to the bathroom, as in tutorial T3.

T5-14

Connect the kitchen

The Plumbing row of the kitchen counts its points not yet linked to a pipe and connects only this kitchen. Site & MEP › Connect fixtures to plumbing does every fixture of the story, Connect all plumbing (全階) every story.

T5-15

Runs on the plumbing plan

The message also lists what is still open: the shaft's risers wait for a water meter, a sewage pit and a water heater (Service line and Plumbing tools). The runs are ordinary elements with sizes and slopes, in the MEP legend & counts and the quantities.

On the Electrical plan the kitchen's power points come from the appliances (the IH hob on 200 V); on Ventilation & HVAC the range hood shows its exhaust at FL+2300. These are points to wire and duct — Connect fixtures to plumbing draws pipes only. (At this zoom the outlet labels overlap; zoom in to read them.)

5 · Wardrobe and storage

T5-16

The same tool draws a wardrobe

Wardrobes, closets, shoe cupboards and 押入れ are casework too. In this copy the generic closet object of bedroom 2 has been taken out, so the wardrobe takes its place against the partition.

T5-17

Along the wall, 1,820

The wardrobe is drawn like a kitchen run: the clicks are its back on the wall face, the fronts face the room. It comes with tall units, doors and a hanging rail. The Info Box shows 1 · 3 · 1.82 m and Check OK.

T5-18

Wardrobe designer: rail, shelves, doors

A wardrobe has one tier of tall units (plus fillers, end panels and open spaces). Per unit: Width, Front (doors, open or none, 1 or 2 leaves), Doors open: Hinged / Sliding, Hanging rail at FL+ (0 = none), Shelves as a list of heights, Inner drawers and shoe shelves. Wardrobe settings set the plinth, depth, height, handles and colours for all units.

T5-19

Or make it an oshiire 押入れ

The status bar says what changed: Oshiire: depth 780, fusuma fronts. Put in the wall in front (Door › Catalog ›) when the closet is behind a wall. For a classic 押入れ behind the wall line, place the fusuma as a door in that wall instead.

6 · Drawings and numbers

T5-20

In the plan: Simple or Detailed

In this plan is a setting of the plan view (the same as View › Casework in plan: Simple / Detailed): use Simple for 1:100 sheets and Detailed for the 1:50 plan and the kitchen sheets.

T5-21

3D of the kitchen

The 3D shows the kitchen as built: walnut fronts and handles, the white worktop with the sink and the IH hob, the wall units and the hood, the island with its overhang and stools. The cutaway box has six faces you can drag (or type), Cut at story, and the cut faces in element colour or hatched.

T5-22

展開図 of the kitchen wall

Under each unit: its width and its code (B60-3F base 60 with 3 drawers, S80-2DR sink base, DW60, H80-3F hob base…); the ceiling height of the room (CH 2801) is dashed at the top. + / − / ⛶ zoom; the wheel zooms, a drag pans, a click picks the unit. Click B island 2400 for the island's elevation.

T5-23

Quantities and estimate lines

Quantities lists the kitchen in two groups: Plumbing — Kitchen (each point with its size) and Kitchen — Kitchen (base, island, wall units and housings by width and front, fillers, the worktop pieces in m and m²); a wardrobe gets its own group. Estimate turns them into priced lines: METOD frames, MAXIMERA drawers, rails and fronts with IKEA Japan prices in yen. Lines with no catalogue product stay without a price until you give one in Price list… — the estimate never invents a price.
